Rugs: The Quiet Powerhouses of a Room

Rugs are one of the most powerful tools in interior design. They soften footsteps, add comfort, and protect floors, but their influence goes far beyond function. The right rug can anchor a furniture arrangement, define zones in an open-plan layout, and introduce layers of color, texture, and personality that transform a space.

The Language of Color

Rug color sets the emotional tone of a room. Consider your lifestyle. Light-colored rugs show wear more easily, while darker or patterned rugs are more forgiving in high-traffic areas

Placement and Flow

Where you position a rug dictates how a room functions and feels. Don’t Leave too much bare floor around a rug—aim for even, intentional spacing

Pattern

Patterns give personality. Large-scale designs make a bold statement.

Small-scale adds texture without overwhelming. Traditional vs. modern styles can balance or contrast with your furniture.

Project Highlight

Jane and Giancarlo’s three-year restoration of an 1863 parsonage pares the “cake box house” back to its essence while layering in subtle modern touches. Original paneling and thickened walls preserve the home’s formality. Artworks by Matt Merkel Hess, Peter Schlesinger, Purvis Young, Landon Metz, and Green River Project create a dialogue between past and present. Accents of green — from a moss-hued silk headboard to olive Nordic Knots rugs — echo the verdant lawn outside, embodying Goethe’s idea of green as “for rooms to live in constantly.”
