Maritza Caneca

Meet Maritza Caneca—a Miami-based visual artist whose work transforms the stillness of swimming pools into a meditation on geometry, reflection, and memory.

With a practice spanning photography, multimedia installations, video, cyanotypes, tiles, and painting, she captures the interplay of light and water in a way that feels both cinematic and deeply personal.

Caneca’s artistic journey began in cinematography, with over 30 years behind the camera. She worked on films like Cinema Falado (1986) by Caetano Veloso and earned the Best Cinematography Award from the Brazilian Association of Cinematographic Photography in 2006.

Currently an artist-in-residence at the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, Caneca continues to explore water as both subject and metaphor.

She has recently expanded her practice into painting, using her photographs as subjects, merging the two mediums.

Recent solo exhibitions include Artfacto: Show My Place (2024) in Rio, Art at the Consulate (2024) in Miami, and Woven Waters (2023) in Miami. She has also contributed to group exhibitions like Botanical Pinacoteca (2024) in Rio and Color Culture Exhibition (2023) in New York.

Her work has appeared in major auctions, including The Palette Project Auction at the Lowe Art Museum (2024), and she is a recipient of the Miami Individual Artists Grant (2023/2024).

Come see Caneca’s work at Pendentive Studio
